Berlin property bargains

Berlin offers some great property bargains so it is not surprising that the city has become a popular investment destination. It is one of the last major centres in Europe to experience growth, and this means that property prices in certain areas are a fraction of what they would be for similar buildings in other European centres.

Berlin misses the wave

For 50 years the city was blighted by the Berlin Wall and political division that brought about economic isolation for both West and East Berlin.

Following the collapse of the wall in 1989, the German government instituted a massive investment programme into Berlin. The city has been restored as the capital of Germany and is now on its way to reclaiming some of its former glamour.

However, the impact of decades of political turbulence, the re-unification of Germany, the waning of the German economy and the launch of the Euro together helped to depress prices in Berlin until recently. The value of properties climbed steadily in recent years after decades of stagnation.

This mini boom has been brought to a sudden end, however, by the global financial crisis. This means that there are still many Berlin property bargains to be found, where some properties can be bought for a tenth of the price of a similar building in London. In some cases, the prices are lower than properties in former Eastern bloc countries.
